A filling is the restoration of damaged or decayed teeth to their normal state. When filling a tooth, the dentist first removes the decayed dentin, cleans the damaged area, and then injects a filling into the vacated tooth cavity.
Fillings not only prevent bacterial infection of the tooth, but also prevent further tooth decay. Fillings for fillings include gold, porcelain, synthetic resin (similar to the color of the tooth), and silver powder (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin, and sometimes zinc).
