According to the LSU College of Veterinary Medicine, a team performed a routine dental cleaning and exam on Mike VII last weekend. The live tiger mascot received services at the nighttime residence on the LSU Baton Rouge campus.
An ophthalmologist also examined Mike’s eyes, and the doctor drew blood for analysis, according to the veterinary school.
“Mike’s exam went well. We gave him a full dental cleaning, oral exam, and eye exam. We also drew blood and will be evaluating him at the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital,” said Dr. Rhett Stout.
Stout, professor and chair of the LSU Department of Laboratory Medicine and the school’s attending veterinarian, directed the team caring for Mike.
More than a dozen people, including faculty, staff, and students, reportedly participated in Mike’s recent exam.
Mike was placed under general anesthesia by Dr. Patricia Quiros-Williams, Dr. Gabriel Castro Cuellar, and Dr. Heather Gozzard, according to the veterinary school. Dr. Melissa Blazevich performed an oral exam and cleaned Mike’s teeth with the help of veterinary dental technician Meg Quinn. Dr. Renee Carter performed an eye exam with the help of veterinary technician Leigh Ann Burton. Other members of the medical team included Dr. Wesley Burnside, Dr. Patrick Hall, Dr. Kelsey Hill, and student caregivers Madison Vicknair and Bailey Weems.
“From what we saw yesterday, Mike appears to be in good health,” Dr. Stout said.
