The Department of Health stated that it received a medical risk warning incident reported by a dental ambulatory medical center, involving a 35-year-old female patient. On January 22 this year, the female patient underwent surgical tooth extraction under deep sedation and anesthesia at the dental ambulatory medical center involved. During the process, she failed to recover from the sedation and was sent to the emergency room for treatment. She is still hospitalized in critical condition.
The Department of Health immediately followed up on the incident after receiving the report, and the dental day care center also submitted an investigation report on the incident as required by the Department of Health.
In response to this medical risk warning incident, the dental ambulatory medical center involved has stopped performing deep sedation and anesthesia procedures. The Department of Health’s investigation is still ongoing and fines or punitive measures will be issued based on the findings. If there is sufficient evidence, the Department of Health will refer it to the relevant regulatory agency for follow-up.
In addition, during the investigation of the incident, the Department of Health found that the dental ambulatory medical center failed to properly manage medical records, medicines and infection control in accordance with the “Code of Practice for Ambulatory Medical Centers” of the Private Healthcare Facilities Ordinance. The person in charge has been asked to take immediate improvement measures to ensure patient safety. The dental day care center involved has since taken improvement measures, and the Department of Health will continue to monitor the situation and take appropriate follow-up actions.
