Maintaining oral health is important, but many overlook regular dental visits. Lai Naixin, 66, discovered this when he visited the dentist seven years ago for a toothache and found his gums severely deteriorated due to neglect. He underwent deep cleaning, which required local anesthesia and four sessions, costing over 800 yuan. This experience taught him the importance of regular dental check-ups to prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems. Now, Lai visits the dentist every six months for check-ups and cleanings.
The government now provides higher allowances for restorative dental treatments, including dentures, for seniors like Lai, with increased subsidies starting in the fourth quarter of the year.
Dr. Sim Boon Han, a dentist, emphasizes that poor oral hygiene is the main cause of tooth and gum degeneration, not just age. He advocates for preventive care, encouraging people to visit the dentist every six months to address issues early and prevent costly, complicated treatments.
Lai notes that many avoid dental visits due to concerns over costs, but with government subsidies, private dental care can be more affordable than expected. To improve price transparency, the Ministry of Health will introduce charging standards for dental treatments in the fourth quarter. This will help patients make more informed choices and reduce reliance on public clinics, leading to faster access to dental care.
