Dr. Ben Hargreave, the principal dentist at Sydney’s Dental Boutique, has shared insightful tips on how to safeguard your teeth and improve overall oral hygiene. Speaking with The Mail, Dr. Hargreave highlighted common habits that can harm dental health and provided practical solutions to help avoid damage.
While drinks like lemon water and apple cider vinegar are popular for their purported health benefits, Dr. Hargreave cautioned against their long-term effects on teeth. “Although these beverages may help with weight loss, their acidic nature can erode enamel over time,” he explained, stressing that such drinks can contribute to gradual enamel wear if consumed frequently.
Additionally, Dr. Hargreave discouraged the use of hard-bristled toothbrushes and abrasive toothpastes, noting that while these may seem effective at removing stains, they can also wear down the protective layer of your teeth. “Opting for a soft-bristled toothbrush is just as effective and significantly gentler on both your teeth and gums,” he advised.
The dentist also raised concerns about the rising trend of seeking dental treatments abroad to save money, particularly in destinations like Mexico, Turkey, and Thailand. “You only have one set of teeth, and we are seeing an increasing number of poorly performed dental procedures overseas,” Dr. Hargreave warned. “These treatments can result in lasting dental issues, and repairing them may end up costing far more than the initial procedure would have at home.”
Dr. Hargreave recommended consulting experienced cosmetic dentists, particularly for specialized treatments, as they bring the expertise required to ensure both safety and high-quality results.
By following these expert guidelines, individuals can avoid common pitfalls and take better care of their teeth, ensuring a healthier smile for years to come.
