Starting in April, the government will roll out 700,000 emergency dental appointments across the country to address urgent care needs. However, dental practices in Swindon are expressing concern that taking on new patients could be a challenge given the high demand and their existing caseloads.
An updated list of local NHS practices currently accepting new patients in 2025 reveals some positive news, with three practices now taking on adults as new patients — an increase from the previous year. These practices include Priory Road Dental Practice, mydentist on Cricklade Road, and Wootton Bassett Dental Care.
In addition, three practices are accepting children under the age of 18, depending on availability. These include Ambience Dental Practice, MR B NEDJATI-GILANI, and Wichelstowe Dental Care.
Despite this, the situation remains challenging. The British Dental Association reports that 90 percent of dentists across the UK are not accepting new NHS adult patients, highlighting the strain on the dental care system.
In Swindon, the issue is compounded by alarming statistics. A recent report revealed that nearly three times as many children in Swindon require hospital dental extractions compared to other areas of the South West. Specifically, 1,045 children and young people per 100,000 of Swindon’s population require extractions, compared to just 376 in the rest of the region. This stark disparity underscores the ongoing challenges facing dental care in the area.
