A new dental hub at the University of Suffolk, which has already treated more than 3,000 patients in its first year, has been officially opened by the Duke of Gloucester.
Located in the James Hehir building on the Ipswich campus, the £4.7m facility is operated by the University of Suffolk’s Dental Community Interest Company (CIC) and provides NHS dental treatments to patients throughout Suffolk and North East Essex.
During his visit, Prince Richard toured the state-of-the-art facility and met with staff and students. Lorraine Mattis, Chief Executive of the CIC, expressed her pride in the impact the hub has had on the local community. “Success, for us, is measured by the difference we’re making to the local people here in Suffolk,” she said. “We’ve seen over 3,000 patients so far, and we’re excited about continuing to serve the community in the years to come. The goal is to increase access to NHS dental services and support the growth of the future workforce.”
The hub, which began offering treatment last spring, also features teaching laboratories for the university’s BSc Dental Hygiene and Therapy course. The third cohort of students for this course will be welcomed in September.
University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jenny Higham, highlighted the collaboration between the university and the NHS as a key component of the hub’s success. “We’re thrilled to train students while also providing dental care to the community,” she said.
During the event, the Duke unveiled a plaque commemorating the opening of the hub, which continues to play a vital role in improving dental access and workforce development in the region.
