Dentists in Wirral have issued a stark warning that a funding crisis could force them to cease providing NHS treatments within the next year.
Stephen Wright, Chair of the Wirral Local Dental Committee, which represents NHS dentists in the area, highlighted that current government funding is insufficient to cover the costs of dental procedures. He described the situation as “unsustainable” and expressed concern that without proper financial support, NHS dental services could disappear altogether.
Despite the critical nature of the issue, Wright stressed that dental practices are private businesses that enter into contracts with the NHS. He pointed out that, according to British Dental Association figures, providing a set of dentures for a patient could result in a loss of £40 per procedure. “It’s just unsustainable. We need adequate income to keep our small businesses afloat. If NHS funding falls short, we are left with no choice but to rely on private patients to make up the difference,” he said.
In addition to financial constraints, the dental profession in Wirral is grappling with a significant staffing shortage. James Ashley, who operates a practice in Rock Ferry, explained that many young dentists, having joined the NHS in recent years, are choosing to work abroad instead. He noted that the opportunity to work in other countries, with better conditions and pay, often outweighs the attraction of staying within the NHS.
The Department of Health and Social Care acknowledged the concerns, with a spokesperson reaffirming the government’s commitment to rebuilding NHS dentistry. The Department also mentioned ongoing efforts to reform the dental contract, aiming to attract more dentists to NHS services and address regional shortages. Additionally, a “golden hello” initiative has been introduced to incentivize dentists to work in areas experiencing high demand for services.
However, until these measures take effect, the future of NHS dental care in Wirral remains uncertain, with many practices struggling to keep their doors open due to inadequate funding and staffing challenges.
