A young Spanish woman residing in the United States recently shared a surprising experience about her first visit to a dental clinic in the country, sparking a lively debate on social media regarding the high costs of healthcare in the U.S.
Mariona Falomi Silla, known on TikTok as @marionsfalomi, posted a video explaining her visit to a dental office in Georgia, where she was initially concerned about the cost of treating severe pain in two of her molars. Fearing a hefty bill, she decided to research affordable options online. Mariona discovered a low-income clinic in Palmetto, Georgia, offering services adjusted to her income level.
The full cost for the consultation was listed at $102, which included X-rays and a general check-up. However, after providing proof of her income, the fee was reduced to just $40, which she was required to pay upfront. This unexpected discount left her astounded, and her video quickly went viral on TikTok, with many users expressing disbelief and curiosity about such affordable healthcare options in the U.S.
The video generated a flurry of reactions. While some users were impressed and sought more information about the clinic, others were skeptical of the low price, noting that dental care in the U.S. is usually expensive. One commenter shared her own experience, stating she paid $500 for a wisdom tooth extraction, even with insurance. Concerns were also raised about the potential quality of care provided at such low-cost clinics, and some users warned that additional bills might be issued post-treatment.
Supporters of the U.S. healthcare system pointed out that low-income clinics like the one Mariona visited are part of aid programs designed to assist those with limited financial resources. However, they cautioned that these clinics could sometimes result in unexpected additional charges after the fact.
Mariona Falomi has previously made waves on social media for discussing her experiences as a Spanish expatriate in the U.S. Her TikTok content has included critiques of the high cost of living in the country, as well as the peculiar American habit of wearing pajamas in public. On the flip side, she has also praised aspects of life in the U.S., such as the absence of strong social prejudices.
