Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira, a couple and dentists with their own practice, have spent years diagnosing and treating a variety of oral health issues. Over the course of their careers, they observed something puzzling: patients with pristine oral hygiene still developed cavities, while others with poor habits often maintained healthy teeth.
This realization sparked their curiosity and led them to question why some people are more prone to cavities than others, even when they follow proper dental care routines. They recognized a significant gap in the market for better solutions and saw an opportunity to change how people approach oral care. That moment of inspiration led to the creation of Rechew, a brand they hope will revolutionize oral health.
Researching Solutions
Both Dr. Hadi and Dr. Amira are no strangers to the science behind dental care, but they were particularly intrigued by xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol known for its oral health benefits. Although it has been used in Europe for decades, xylitol remains relatively rare in Malaysian products, with many local dentists unaware of its advantages. The couple discovered that while xylitol is an effective ingredient that promotes good oral health, it is rarely used in sufficient amounts in products due to its high cost.
Dr. Amira explained, “Xylitol targets harmful bacteria in the mouth, reduces plaque buildup, stimulates saliva production, and helps protect and repair enamel. But the problem is, many products contain only a small amount of xylitol to cut costs.”
For optimal oral health, research suggests consuming 6-8 grams of xylitol daily. While the ingredient is safe in moderate amounts, it can cause digestive discomfort in high doses and is toxic to dogs, making it essential to keep xylitol products out of pets’ reach.
Creating a Better Product
Determined to create a more effective solution, the couple decided to develop their own line of xylitol-based chewables. They wanted to offer a product that was not just a sweet treat but a genuine oral care aid that could help prevent cavities and improve dental health.
Initially, they worked with local pharmaceutical labs and confectionery manufacturers, but the first prototypes lacked the desired taste, texture, and appeal. Undeterred, they turned to a pharmaceutical lab in China, where they refined their product and developed a line of xylitol pastilles in just five months.
Rechew’s xylitol pastilles are designed as a supplementary tool to regular brushing and flossing, targeting those who are prone to cavities, including young children. Unlike chewing gum, the pastilles are safe for kids as young as two years old. The product is available in three flavors and is marketed as an effective addition to any oral care routine.
Growing Popularity
The response to Rechew has been overwhelmingly positive, with many Malaysians already familiar with the benefits of xylitol. The product is currently available online through TikTok Shop and Shopee, as well as at the Dental Duo Clinic, and has received Halal certification from SHC, a Chinese certification body recognized by JAKIM.
Despite the challenge of managing both their dental practice and the Rechew brand, Dr. Amira and Dr. Hadi view the business as a natural extension of their passion for preventive oral health. “Our goal is not just to create a product, but to help people achieve healthier smiles through smarter oral care,” said Dr. Hadi.
Looking ahead, they aim to expand Rechew’s reach to drugstore shelves across Malaysia and beyond, bringing their innovative approach to oral care to a wider audience.
Ultimately, the couple hopes to continue bridging the gap between routine oral hygiene and lasting dental health, ensuring that healthier, happier smiles are accessible to everyone.
