The rise in tooth decay among children, especially in areas such as the North East, London, and the South West, has been a growing concern in the UK. Recent research revealed that over 60% of five-year-olds in areas like Manchester have experienced enamel or tooth decay by 2024, which highlights the stark disparities in oral health between less affluent and wealthier regions. The crisis is exacerbated by limited access to dental care, leading to calls for preventative measures.
Thankfully, Miranda Pascucci, a dental therapist working with the oral health brand TePe, has shared key tips to help protect children’s teeth from decay. While some suggestions are well-known, others might come as a surprise to many.
Here are some of her top recommendations:
Brush Twice a Day
Establishing a solid brushing routine is essential. Children should brush their teeth twice a day, once in the morning and again before bedtime. Ensuring that children brush before bed is particularly important as saliva production decreases at night, reducing the mouth’s natural protective ability.
Correct Brushing Technique
It’s important to teach children how to brush properly from the moment the first tooth appears. Use gentle movements at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line, brushing all surfaces of the teeth, including the gum line, inside, outside, and biting surfaces.
Use the Right Toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste is essential for strengthening tooth enamel and preventing cavities. For children aged 0-3, a smear of toothpaste should be used, and for children aged 3 and up, a pea-sized amount is sufficient. Toothpaste with at least 1,000 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride should be used for younger children, while those aged 7 and older should use a higher fluoride concentration of 1,350-1,500 ppm.
Incorporate Flossing
Since toothbrushes can only clean about 60% of the tooth surface, flossing or using interdental brushes is recommended to ensure all areas of the mouth are clean. Younger children can be helped by parents with flossing, while older children should be encouraged to do it independently with supervision.
Add Healthy Foods to Their Diet
Certain foods are beneficial for oral health, and including them in children’s diets can help prevent tooth decay. Nuts such as Brazil nuts and cashews are rich in phosphorus, which helps strengthen teeth and gums. Cheese, full of calcium, can help neutralize acids in the mouth, stimulate saliva flow, and wash away harmful bacteria.
Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks
Sugary foods and drinks contribute to plaque buildup, which can lead to tooth decay. If children do consume sugary snacks, it’s important to ensure that it is during mealtimes to minimize the damage. After consuming sugar, encourage children to rinse their mouths with water to help neutralize acids and stimulate saliva production.
Give Teeth Time to Recover
Avoid frequent snacking between meals, as it leads to multiple acid attacks on the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities. Regular mealtimes give the teeth time to recover from the acids produced by eating.
Make Brushing Fun
Children are more likely to stick to a brushing routine if it’s enjoyable. Using songs, timers, or brushing games can make the process entertaining and help instill the habit early on.
Regular Dental Visits
Scheduling regular visits to the dentist is crucial to monitor your child’s oral health. Dentists can identify issues like cavities early and provide advice on maintaining a proper oral care routine.
Explain the Importance of Oral Health
While younger children may not fully understand the long-term benefits, explaining the importance of oral health to older children can help them realize that brushing helps prevent cavities and keeps their breath fresh.
Additionally, surprising foods like cheese and certain nuts can significantly contribute to a child’s oral health. These foods not only provide essential nutrients but also help protect against the harmful effects of acids in the mouth.
By following these expert recommendations and encouraging healthy habits, parents can help their children maintain strong, healthy teeth, preventing the widespread issue of early childhood tooth decay.
