A new dental initiative in Essex is making a significant impact by bringing essential oral care services to over 4,000 care home residents. The NHS Mid and South Essex scheme, which began in late 2023, sees dedicated dental teams visiting care homes to conduct oral health assessments and provide treatments on-site.
The program aims to enhance the quality of life for residents by addressing oral health issues and reducing the health risks associated with poor dental hygiene. Among those benefiting from the initiative are Yvonne, a great-grandmother of one, and Sheila, a great-grandmother of three, both of whom live at Cherry Wood Grange care home in Chelmsford.
Jo, the deputy manager of Cherry Wood Grange, praised the program’s positive impact: “The service has been amazing, benefiting both our residents and staff. Addressing dental needs has allowed residents to eat and drink more comfortably, feel happier, and engage more confidently in social activities.”
This initiative spans all 285 care homes across mid and south Essex, with support from 11 local dental practices. The dental teams provide a wide range of services, including cleanings, fillings, and denture repairs, all aimed at improving the overall health and wellbeing of residents.
The success of the program has already attracted attention from other regions, eager to replicate its positive outcomes for care home residents across the country.
