After recently undergoing a tooth extraction at the Instituto Odontológico de las Américas (IOA), I realized that dental problems can quickly accumulate, requiring significant treatment over time. While the prices at IOA weren’t the highest, the overall cost of all the treatments I needed added up to a substantial amount.
This led me to consider getting a dental plan, but the next question was: which one should I choose, and how does it all work? To get some guidance, I turned to a fellow church member whose work is closely related to dental care, and he recommended DentalUni. I remembered that I had previously signed up with this company while working at Condor supermarket, but since I never used it, the plan was automatically canceled when I left my job.
Although I’m still not entirely sure about how everything functions, I decided to sign a contract with DentalUni, including my wife and daughter as beneficiaries. The plan costs 107.70 reais per month for the basic coverage, which excludes more costly procedures like braces.
Depending on the number of family members included, the services covered, and whether you want immediate activation or a delay before the plan starts, the monthly fee can range from 24.00 to over 200.00 reais.
To access the plan, you download an app that provides a virtual card, which can be used to access services until the physical card arrives, typically within 30 days. However, the app isn’t without its challenges—like many systems in Brazil, it often faces slow speeds, occasional crashes, and user-unfriendly interfaces.
While I signed up for a basic plan, it offers over 50 different procedures, including periodontics, which I carefully verified before proceeding.
The monthly cost fits comfortably within our family’s budget, which currently stands at around 5,000 reais (roughly 800 dollars). However, for families with lower incomes, the affordability may be a concern, as the current minimum wage in Brazil is 1,500 reais.
Although I have yet to use any of the services, the process is made easy through the virtual card. You can search for nearby clinics and conveniently schedule appointments online.
