Access to dental care remains a significant challenge for many adults in Northern Arizona, especially for those with limited income, inadequate insurance, or no access to dental providers. The Dental Days program is helping bridge this gap by offering free mobile dental clinics, making essential dental care accessible to those who would otherwise struggle to afford or access it.
Founded in August 2022, Dental Days has seen significant growth thanks to the collaboration between volunteers, local healthcare providers, and key community organizations like the Health First Foundation. The most recent event in December 2023 was the most successful clinic yet, serving 89 individuals and marking a significant milestone for the program.
Addressing the Need
The program focuses on offering free dental screenings and treatments during Saturday clinics, which are especially crucial in areas like Coconino County, where there is a limited number of adult dental care providers. Alicia Yaeger-Booth, an executive committee member of the program with a background in public health, explains that access to dental care is limited by Medicaid coverage restrictions, a lack of providers, and the inability for low-income workers to qualify for assistance due to Flagstaff’s high minimum wage.
To ensure accessibility, Dental Days holds pre-screening sessions the Friday before each Saturday clinic. This allows patients, especially those with busy work schedules, to be evaluated ahead of time and make the most of the services offered.
Yaeger-Booth credits the Health First Foundation for making this work possible, noting that the $82,000 grant provided crucial support for supplies, equipment, and the trailer necessary to host the clinics. “The funding has made a huge difference in our ability to serve more people and expand to new venues,” she said.
Looking to the Future
With three successful clinics already under their belt, the Dental Days team is focused on expanding the program. The team hopes to increase the number of clinics to four per year, reaching more individuals in need. The return of many patients to the clinics is a testament to the program’s impact and the ongoing demand for affordable dental care.
Yaeger-Booth emphasizes that the success of the program is rooted in the community effort. “Our volunteers are incredible – they’re the ones who make these clinics run,” she said. “It’s a community effort, and it’s what makes this program so special. People are eager to help because they care about improving the lives of their neighbors.”
The Dental Days program continues to serve Flagstaff and surrounding areas, providing high-quality and compassionate dental care to individuals who may not otherwise have access to it.
