According to a recent report by the Ohio Department of Health, children from low-income families are more than twice as likely to suffer from untreated cavities compared to their peers. Left untreated, these cavities can cause significant pain, hinder eating, and even result in missed school days. To combat these challenges, a special event will be held at Shawnee State University on Friday, February 7, 2025, offering free dental services to children within the Scioto County School District.
The event, part of the nationwide Give Kids A Smile initiative, will unite volunteer dentists from the Southern Ohio Dental Society and dental hygiene students from Shawnee State University. It is anticipated that between 50 and 75 children will benefit from preventive dental care, including cleanings and treatments, as well as important lessons on maintaining proper oral hygiene. The event will begin with a brief opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in Shawnee State University’s Health Sciences Building, Room 101, followed by dental services from 9 a.m. to noon.
Organizers of the event stress the importance of instilling good dental habits at an early age to promote long-term health. “This program is not just about cleanings, it’s about providing kids with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent larger dental issues in the future,” said a spokesperson for the Southern Ohio Dental Society.
Give Kids A Smile is a volunteer-driven program launched by the American Dental Association, offering free dental care and educational resources to children across the country. Local events like this one rely on collaborations with schools, universities, and community organizations to reach families who may lack access to dental care.
Community members are encouraged to visit Shawnee State University on February 7 to witness firsthand how the local community is working together to improve the oral health and well-being of Southern Ohio’s children.
