New York, it’s time to face the music—our dental health is not exactly something to be proud of. Every year, WalletHub ranks the states based on their dental hygiene, and while New York isn’t at the very bottom of the list, it certainly isn’t a shining example either.
So, what’s the issue with our pearly whites? WalletHub’s recent study dives into factors such as dentist availability, how often adults and children make those all-important dental visits, and, of course, our love for sugary treats. Spoiler alert: the results aren’t pretty.
Despite many residents having access to employer-sponsored dental plans, a significant number of New Yorkers still skip regular check-ups. For those without insurance, a visit to the dentist can feel like an expensive luxury—out of reach for many. Basic habits like brushing and flossing seem to be on the decline, compounded by unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and an ongoing obsession with sugar-laden snacks. This combination often leads to common dental issues like cavities, gum disease, and the dreaded “sweater teeth.”
How Bad Did We Do?
In the latest WalletHub rankings for 2025, New York sits at 30th place for dental health. While that’s a slight improvement from last year’s 32nd spot, it still leaves a lot to be desired. At this rate, we might crack the top 10 by the time Barron Trump is President—fingers crossed, right?
But don’t despair just yet. There is hope. Simple steps like brushing and flossing more regularly, cutting back on sugar, and scheduling that overdue dental check-up could have a significant positive impact. It’s never too late to start taking better care of your teeth, and a little effort can go a long way in improving New York’s dental health rankings.
