A 70-year-old woman from Hempstead, New York, is facing charges after allegedly practicing dentistry without a license in the kitchen of her one-bedroom apartment. Gladys Serrano has been charged with one count of unauthorized practice of a profession, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. Serrano, who pleaded not guilty, is under investigation after a series of questionable dental procedures conducted at her home.
On July 26, a woman seeking dental care visited Serrano’s apartment, where Serrano performed a tooth extraction. The victim was initially referred to Serrano for a single extraction, but during the appointment, Serrano allegedly informed her that five of her teeth needed to be removed due to decay. The woman was also advised that she would require a bridge, but officials say she never received one that fit her mouth, despite multiple visits between July and December.
Authorities said that during the extraction, Serrano provided the woman with paper towels to absorb the excessive blood and instructed her to rinse with salt water. The victim paid Serrano $1,950 for the dental services, although no proper treatment was provided for the bridge.
A search of Serrano’s apartment revealed disturbing findings. Authorities discovered a patient chair near the kitchen sink, used dental tools in drawers, and multiple empty vials of medication and dental needles. Drugs, including Lidocaine and Amoxicillin, were also seized during the search. State records confirm that Serrano is not licensed to practice dentistry in New York.
The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office has urged anyone who believes they may have been affected by Serrano’s unlicensed dental practices to come forward.
