In a recent viral TikTok video, Houston-based dentist Christopher Emdin, who has amassed over 8,000 followers, shared a revealing insight into what sets patients with the cleanest teeth apart. With over 4.1 million views in just three days, Emdin explained that the difference between his average patients and those with pristine dental health is “night and day.”
The Secret to Pristine Teeth: Electric Toothbrushes
According to Emdin, the key factor that separates these patients is their consistent use of one particular tool: the electric toothbrush. He observed that patients who come in for their routine checkups—whether bi-annual or yearly—often have noticeably cleaner teeth if they have switched to an electric toothbrush.
“Whenever I see patients with the cleanest teeth, it’s clear they’ve made the switch,” Emdin said. “Their teeth are slick, their gums don’t bleed, and you can immediately tell they’ve been using an electric toothbrush.”

Emdin highlighted two popular electric toothbrush brands—Oral-B iO and Philips Sonicare—as favorites among his patients with exceptional dental hygiene. He emphasized that the difference between electric and manual toothbrushes is as drastic as switching from a notepad to an iPad.
“If you haven’t switched to an electric toothbrush yet, it’s like using a notepad instead of an iPad—there’s that much of a difference,” Emdin said.

Research shows that electric toothbrushes, especially those with oscillating-rotating or sonic technology, can remove up to 21% more plaque than manual toothbrushes.
