A bright, white smile is a goal for many, but for some, achieving those gleaming teeth seems out of reach despite regular brushing. According to Dr. Zainab Mackie, a Michigan-based dentist, overzealous efforts to whiten teeth can sometimes backfire, negatively impacting oral health.
Dr. Mackie shared her insights in a TikTok video in response to a man who complained about his persistent yellow teeth despite brushing daily. She explained that a common mistake people make when brushing is applying excessive force. “Brushing too hard can strip away the white enamel on your teeth,” she warned. This outer layer serves as a protective shield, and when it erodes, the underlying dentin—yellow-brown in color—becomes exposed, contributing to the yellowish tint many try so hard to avoid.
Beyond brushing habits, Dr. Mackie pointed out that diet and lifestyle choices play a significant role in the color of your teeth. Smoking, sugary snacks, and certain drinks like soda and acidic fruit juices can stain teeth. She specifically mentioned that excessive soda consumption can lead to discoloration, as can drinking too much coffee. “If you drink soda, that’s going to stain your teeth,” Dr. Mackie cautioned. She also recommended using a straw to protect teeth from the staining effects of fizzy drinks and coffee.
Medications, including some antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and antihistamines, can also contribute to yellowing teeth.
The advice shared by Dr. Mackie has gained widespread praise online, with many social media users expressing surprise at their own brushing habits. One user admitted, “So I’ve been brushing too hard!!” while another jokingly commented, “Watching while drinking a whole bottle of coke.”
By adjusting brushing techniques and being mindful of dietary habits, achieving a brighter smile may be easier and healthier than you think.
