As a prosthodontist, my mission extends beyond restoring smiles — it’s about restoring confidence and improving the quality of life for my patients. Whether it’s helping someone chew without discomfort or allowing them to smile freely, I witness daily the transformative power of dental care. However, a significant barrier stands in the way of many patients receiving the care they desperately need — dental insurance.
As the 2025 legislative session approaches, lawmakers have a vital opportunity to address this pressing issue. Patients work hard, pay their premiums, and place their trust in insurance companies to provide support when they need it most. Sadly, the reality is far from ideal. Delays, denials, and arbitrary coverage restrictions often force patients to choose between their health and their finances.
I see firsthand the human toll of these insurance failures. A patient in need of an implant after years of living with a damaged tooth should not have to fight with their insurance company for approval. Others delay critical treatments due to the fear of surprise costs caused by inadequate insurance reimbursement, putting their health at serious risk. Oral health goes beyond just healthy teeth — it affects nutrition, speech, self-esteem, and social interactions, and it can be a gateway to larger systemic health issues.
Dental insurance policies frequently create unnecessary barriers to care, frustrating providers who are dedicated to their patients’ well-being. Healthcare professionals, including those in dentistry, work tirelessly to treat every patient with the care and compassion they would offer to their own families. Unfortunately, many insurance companies fail to match that level of commitment. Instead of facilitating access to necessary care, restrictive policies and delays exacerbate the challenges patients face, especially within families who already struggle to maintain their health.
This is not just a concern for individual dental practices; it has become a widespread issue within our communities. Untreated oral health problems have significant consequences, contributing to higher costs for families and the broader healthcare system. Reform is not just necessary — it’s urgent. Transparency, fair reimbursement practices, and a focus on patient-centered care are critical changes needed to ensure that providers can prioritize their patients’ needs rather than navigate bureaucratic obstacles.
Lawmakers have the chance to implement meaningful policy changes that hold insurance companies accountable and protect Oklahoma families. By fostering a healthcare system that genuinely serves its members, we can improve health outcomes and build a healthier future for all. Oklahoma families deserve better. Dental insurance should be a resource that supports them, not a hurdle to overcome.
