Retired Willow Creek dentist Dr. Tom Lewis has been nominated for recognition due to his tireless volunteer efforts and commitment to enhancing community health, particularly through improving people’s smiles.
Dr. Lewis played a pivotal role in organizing a free healthcare clinic held last summer at the Adorni Center, which treated hundreds of patients over the course of two days. According to Beverly Lewis of Eureka, who submitted a nomination letter on behalf of Dr. Lewis (and is not related to him), the clinic served a significant number of individuals, with 224 dental patients, 219 vision patients (most leaving with new eyeglasses), and 529 medical patients receiving essential care. “That’s $278,551 worth of care that Tom brought to our community, care that would not have been received if Tom had not brought this clinic to us,” she emphasized, noting that these figures were provided by California CareForce.
A former board member of California CareForce, Dr. Lewis raised over $50,000 to make the event possible. Local resident Sarah Vogel, who also nominated Dr. Lewis, highlighted his dedication to securing financial and volunteer support for the clinic. “Dr. Lewis spent endless hours speaking at public meetings and forums to get the necessary backing,” Vogel wrote. “He even went door to door seeking volunteers from dental offices and offered his own dental expertise when there was a shortage of professionals willing to serve.”
Vogel further praised Dr. Lewis, describing him as “an example of the best in his generation,” a person who uses his professional skills, volunteer time, and faith to show compassion to those in need of care but unable to afford it.
