The University of Hong Kong’s (HKU) Faculty of Dentistry has launched the second phase of patient recruitment for the Azalea Gum Treatment Project, with continued support from the generous HKD 11 million donation from the Azalea (1972) Endowment Fund. This pioneering dental initiative is designed to improve access to high-quality dental care for underserved populations, and it has gained strong backing from global leaders in the dental industry.
The Straumann Group, Modern Dental Group, Ray HK, and Dentsply Sirona have all made significant in-kind contributions, ensuring that the project benefits from premium dental products and professional laboratory services. These partnerships amplify the project’s mission to deliver cutting-edge treatments and make a meaningful impact on oral health standards in the community.
The project’s success is already evident following the completion of its first recruitment phase, during which eligible patients began receiving comprehensive, free dental care at IAD-MSC. Dr. George Pelekos, Project Lead and Clinical Associate Professor, noted the positive results: “We are seeing improvements in oral and general health, chewing function, speech, wellbeing, and confidence among patients.”
The initiative is focused on offering free treatments to individuals receiving Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) or those eligible for social housing in Hong Kong. Interested individuals can contact IAD-MSC at 3979 9191 to schedule a screening appointment and take part in this valuable opportunity for advanced dental care. With its strong partnerships and dedicated efforts, the Azalea Gum Treatment Project continues to make strides in elevating oral health across Hong Kong.
