A bright, white smile is often seen as a symbol of health and beauty, but for many, achieving that perfect set of pearly whites can seem impossible. Despite their best efforts, some people struggle with persistent yellow teeth, no matter how diligently they brush. According to Dr. Zainab Mackie, a Michigan-based dentist, this may be due to common oral care mistakes that unintentionally harm tooth health.
Dr. Mackie recently shared her expert advice in a TikTok video, responding to a concerned man who complained about brushing daily but still had yellow teeth. She identified two major culprits behind this issue: aggressive brushing and certain lifestyle factors.
In her response, Dr. Mackie pointed out that brushing too hard is a frequent mistake that can erode the enamel—the protective outer layer of the tooth. Enamel is essential for safeguarding teeth from decay, and when it’s worn down by excessive pressure, the yellowish dentin layer beneath becomes visible.
She also highlighted that diet and lifestyle choices play a significant role in tooth discoloration. Smoking and consuming acidic foods and drinks, such as soda and fruit juices, can stain teeth over time. Certain medications, including antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and antihistamines, are also known to contribute to yellowing.
To help preserve tooth color, Dr. Mackie recommended using a straw when drinking beverages like soda or coffee. This simple step can minimize direct contact with the teeth, helping to protect the enamel.
The video quickly garnered attention, with viewers expressing gratitude for the helpful tips. One commented, “So I’ve been brushing too hard!” while another playfully admitted, “Watching while drinking a whole bottle of Coke.”
By adjusting brushing habits and making mindful lifestyle choices, anyone can improve the appearance of their smile and maintain healthy teeth.
