As the new year begins, focusing on overall health is a top priority for many. But according to Dr. Anne Clemons, DMD, a dentist at Cleveland Clinic, people often overlook one crucial aspect of their well-being: oral health.
Dr. Clemons stresses the importance of considering the mouth as an integral part of the body, explaining that it plays a vital role in both the digestive and respiratory systems. “Your mouth is the starting point for your gastrointestinal tract and respiratory system,” she said. “But for some reason, we tend to separate oral health from the rest of the body.”
To maintain optimal oral hygiene, Dr. Clemons recommends brushing your teeth twice daily for two minutes and flossing at least once a day. Regular dental check-ups are also essential to prevent the buildup of plaque, a sticky film that contains food particles, bacteria, and saliva. If left unchecked, plaque can lead to various dental issues, including cavities, tooth decay, gum disease, and chronic bad breath.
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can often be reversed in its early stages. However, if untreated, it can escalate into more severe health concerns. Dr. Clemons pointed to research showing a link between gum disease and serious medical conditions such as heart disease and stroke. “People with gum disease are more likely to develop heart disease, and vice versa,” she noted. “Even when accounting for other common risk factors, this connection remains significant.”
Diet also plays a pivotal role in oral health, with poor dietary choices potentially exacerbating dental problems. Dr. Clemons encourages individuals to consider their oral hygiene as part of a holistic approach to overall health. Prioritizing good dental habits and regular check-ups can help prevent not only oral complications but also more serious health issues down the line.
