Felisha Edwards is speaking out after a botched veneers procedure left her with permanent dental damage and embarrassment. Edwards, who sought dental work at Dr. J Dental Spa, a now-shuttered practice in Milwaukee, is suing the unlicensed owner, Jessica Stewart, claiming the procedure ruined her teeth and cost her over $20,000.
Edwards originally turned to Stewart after searching for veneers online. She was drawn to the clinic, which appeared legitimate, with a white lab coat-wearing professional and a high-end office. “I saw her in a white doctor jacket and it said Dr. J,” Edwards said, recalling her first visit. “It looked just like a dentist. It’s a really nice office.”
However, Edwards’s experience quickly soured after she paid nearly $6,000 for veneers that soon began falling out, even after multiple repairs. “The last time, I’m at a restaurant and they’re all in the napkin,” Edwards recalled, describing the embarrassment and frustration she felt when her veneers came loose again. “I’m really upset. I’m just like, oh my god, embarrassed.”
The procedure not only left Edwards with pain but also caused further complications, as she sought the help of a licensed dentist to address the damage. The condition of her teeth was worse than she had imagined—filled with improperly placed veneers and debris. Edwards claims Stewart refused to refund her and that her negligence left permanent damage.
Edwards filed a lawsuit against Stewart in December 2023, seeking compensation for the pain and suffering caused by the illegal dental work. The civil case accuses Stewart of negligence, incompetence, and a lack of training and licensure. “Due to her negligence and lack of licensure, Stewart was unable to correct the damage,” the lawsuit states.
The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services confirmed that Stewart is not licensed to practice dentistry in the state, despite operating a dental business. Stewart had received a cease-and-desist order in 2022 but continued performing unauthorized dental work, including the placement of veneers.
In a December interview, when questioned about her unlicensed status, Stewart admitted that calling herself “Dr. J” could be misleading but claimed she made sure to inform customers that she was not a licensed dentist. “I be sure to reiterate that to them that I am not a dentist,” she told the journalist.
Edwards hopes her lawsuit will not only secure reimbursement but also prevent Stewart from continuing to harm others. “You’re getting something that is not safe,” she warned potential customers. “It may be a little cheaper. She may be like you, but it’s not, that’s not right.”
As Edwards pursues justice, the Wisconsin authorities are investigating Stewart for potential criminal charges. After receiving multiple complaints over the years, the case has been sent to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office for further review, though no comment has been made on the status of criminal proceedings.
