Dr. Nyree Whitley, chief clinical officer at mydentist, revealed that Prosecco’s acidity can erode tooth enamel, which could lead to yellowing or discoloration over time. She explained, “While Prosecco is a delightful drink, the acidity can soften enamel, and this can eventually lead to discolouration.”
To minimize the impact, Dr. Whitley suggested reducing your Prosecco intake or using a straw when drinking. The straw helps limit direct contact between the acidic drink and your teeth. Additionally, she cautioned against brushing your teeth immediately after drinking Prosecco or any alcohol. Brushing too soon can spread the acid and cause more damage to the enamel. Instead, she recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before brushing.
Dr. Whitley’s advice aligns with what other dental professionals have shared in the past. In a viral TikTok video, dentist Dr. Vanessa Creaven warned that drinks like Prosecco and Champagne, while bubbly and festive, are highly acidic and can lead to significant enamel erosion. This erosion can make your enamel appear translucent or grey and increase tooth sensitivity.
To protect your smile during the holiday season, Dr. Creaven suggested sipping bubbly through a straw and chewing gum afterward to stimulate saliva, which naturally helps neutralize the acidity. If you notice increased tooth sensitivity or stains on your teeth, it’s important to consult with your dentist for an examination.
Dr. Whitley also emphasized the importance of being cautious with your sugar intake, as excess sugar from holiday treats and drinks can contribute to tooth decay. Keep an eye on your dental hygiene and enjoy the festivities while protecting your teeth!
