In response to alarming rates of childhood tooth decay and limited access to dental care, Children’s Choice Dental Care has launched two new pediatric dental offices in Bakersfield and Redding. These clinics are designed to provide comprehensive and preventive services to underserved regions, where barriers to consistent dental care have persisted for years.
For families in the Central Valley and Shasta County, accessing regular dental care has long been a challenge. Children’s Choice aims to break down these barriers by creating family-friendly environments where children can receive essential care in a welcoming and supportive setting. By emphasizing prevention and early intervention, the new offices are tackling the root causes of poor oral health and helping to build a foundation for lifelong wellness.
“Every child deserves a healthy smile, regardless of their circumstances,” said Dr. Jeff Jacobson, chief clinical officer at Children’s Choice. “In areas like Bakersfield and Redding, where untreated dental issues are more prevalent, we’re committed to creating spaces where children feel cared for and supported. Healthy teeth aren’t just about oral health—they’re crucial for children’s success in school and confidence in daily life. Addressing these issues means empowering families and giving children the tools they need to thrive.”
Widespread Need for Pediatric Dental Care
The need for accessible dental services is pressing. Across California, 61% of third graders have experienced tooth decay, and more than 22% have untreated cavities. In 25 Northern California counties, including Shasta County, nearly 52% of children are affected by tooth decay by the third grade. These figures highlight a broader national issue, as tooth decay remains the most common chronic condition among children in the U.S.
The American Dental Association recommends that children begin dental visits when their first tooth appears or by their first birthday. By providing positive dental experiences early on, Children’s Choice hopes to encourage healthy habits that children will carry into adulthood.
A Vision for Lasting Community Impact
Children’s Choice isn’t just addressing immediate dental needs; they are fostering long-term change. “We’re focused on creating a proactive approach to care,” said Dr. Jacobson. “When families have reliable, accessible dental services, it empowers them to prioritize their children’s health, creating ripple effects that benefit the entire community.”
