While acknowledging their convenience, Dr. Tang emphasized that using these picks improperly could lead to ineffective cleaning and potential harm to gum health.
“Flossing is about technique,” Dr. Tang explains in the video. “The goal is to clean below the gum line and around the tooth in a ‘C-shape’ motion. When using flossing picks, it’s crucial to ensure that you’re cleaning beneath the gum line effectively.” She goes on to caution against using the pick end of the tool on the gums, as it can cause damage.
The key to effective flossing, Dr. Tang says, lies in wrapping the floss around each tooth to remove plaque and debris without harming the delicate gum tissue. This is something that flossing picks, with their rigid structure, cannot easily achieve.
