As winter approaches and sunlight becomes scarce, many people unknowingly put their oral health in jeopardy due to a common deficiency in Vitamin D, which can lead to serious dental problems and even tooth loss.
Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum, warns that Vitamin D plays a crucial role in maintaining strong bones, including the jawbone that supports teeth. A deficiency in this vital nutrient can result in weakened bones, increasing the risk of tooth mobility and even loss. “Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium, which is necessary for strong bones,” Dr. Bozic explained. “Without enough Vitamin D, the body struggles to absorb calcium properly, weakening the jawbone and the structures that support the teeth.”
Although Vitamin D does not directly affect the strength of tooth enamel, which is formed during fetal development and cannot regenerate, it is essential for the overall health of the bones and gums surrounding the teeth. Dr. Bozic added that a lack of Vitamin D can also compromise gum health, making them more prone to infection. “When Vitamin D levels are low, the immune system struggles to control inflammation in the gums, increasing the risk of gingivitis,” he said. “If untreated, this inflammation can progress into periodontitis, a severe gum disease that can result in tooth loss.”
The problem becomes more pronounced in the winter months when reduced sunlight exposure limits the body’s ability to produce sufficient Vitamin D. “In winter, many people don’t get enough sunlight to maintain adequate Vitamin D levels,” Dr. Bozic noted. “Coupled with a diet lacking in Vitamin D-rich foods, this deficiency can put your oral health at significant risk.”
Early signs of Vitamin D deficiency can include bleeding gums, gum sensitivity, and loose teeth. “These symptoms may often be overlooked or mistaken for minor issues, but they could be indicators that the bone structure supporting your teeth is weakening,” Dr. Bozic cautioned.
