Following his submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 308, Robert Whittaker has undergone oral surgery to address significant dental damage. The procedure involved the implantation of six teeth in his lower jaw, a necessary step after his middle teeth became unstable during the fight with Dricus Du Plessis. Whittaker’s coach, Alex Prates, explained that Chimaev’s face crank during the bout caused immediate damage to Whittaker’s three front teeth, leading to their breakage.
Despite the intense procedure, Whittaker wasted no time returning to training. He resumed his activities on Monday, though with some limitations. “He can train in muay thai, run, and do everything except contact drills,” Prates stated. However, a potential minor surgery on Whittaker’s elbow to remove bone fragments is still under consideration. While not a major concern, this additional surgery could delay his return by another month. The current plan is to have Whittaker back in the Octagon by June.
In other news, Prates’ fighter Jacob Malkoun is preparing for his upcoming UFC bout on February 15 in Las Vegas, where he will face Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Rodolfo Vieira. Prates believes the fight is a great opportunity for both competitors, with the winner likely to break into the Top 15 rankings. “Jacob has an advantage standing up with his four professional boxing bouts, while Rodolfo has a clear edge on the ground,” Prates said, expressing confidence in Malkoun’s victory.
