A dentist has issued a stark warning about the dangers of cosmetic dentistry after a woman’s new set of teeth resulted in a series of serious health complications. Dr. Aodhan Docherty, an Australian dental professional, cautioned that such procedures could lead to speech problems, joint damage, and significant harm to both bone and gum health.
In a TikTok video, Dr. Docherty analyzed the woman’s cosmetic dental work, explaining that her teeth were excessively long and bridged together, giving them a “fence post” appearance. He noted that this unnatural arrangement could lead to a range of issues, including speech difficulties, as the excessive length interferes with normal pronunciation. “When we speak, we require a certain amount of space between our upper and lower teeth to form words,” Dr. Docherty explained. “Her pronunciation isn’t quite right because the teeth are so long. They’re banging off her lower teeth.”
Despite the woman initially expressing satisfaction with her new appearance, Dr. Docherty strongly discouraged others from undergoing similar cosmetic treatments. He stressed that such procedures could be disastrous for dental health, warning that the unnatural alignment could cause long-term damage to the gums and jawbone, as well as irreversible damage to the jaw joints. Additionally, the excessive length of the teeth could create ongoing speech and pronunciation issues.
“Each to their own with how people want their teeth to look,” Dr. Docherty acknowledged, “but when cosmetic dentistry goes wrong, the consequences can be severe.”
Fortunately, the woman later had the problematic teeth removed, and subsequent TikTok videos show her speaking more clearly. However, her case serves as a cautionary tale for anyone considering drastic cosmetic dental procedures, highlighting the importance of prioritizing both function and health over appearance.
