Maintaining a bright, white smile can be challenging, especially as we age, but according to Dr. Ferakh Hamid from Aesthetique Dental Care, there are common mistakes many people make that can worsen the issue. Here’s a breakdown of the key advice from Dr. Hamid:
Wetting Your Toothbrush: One of the simplest but most overlooked steps in tooth care is wetting your toothbrush before brushing. Dr. Hamid advises that wetting the bristles helps spread the toothpaste evenly across your teeth, improving cleaning effectiveness. It also softens the bristles, making brushing gentler on your gums and teeth, reducing the risk of irritation or damage.
Avoiding Dry Brushing: While dry brushing may seem like it could help remove surface stains, it can actually contribute to dull teeth. Without water, toothpaste doesn’t spread as easily, leading to less effective cleaning and, over time, potentially contributing to a duller smile.
Brushing After Eating Acidic Foods: Another common mistake is brushing right after consuming acidic foods like citrus or soda. Dr. Hamid points out that the acid softens tooth enamel, and brushing too soon afterward can wear it down, revealing the yellowish layer beneath and making your teeth look more yellow. To protect your enamel, it’s better to wait 20–30 minutes after eating before brushing.
Maintaining a Proper Oral Hygiene Routine: To keep your teeth healthy and your breath fresh, Dr. Hamid stresses the importance of brushing gently for two minutes, twice a day. Complement this with antimicrobial mouthwash or toothpaste to fight germs, regular dental checkups, and tongue cleaning. If you wear dentures, make sure to clean them regularly too.
By following these simple guidelines, you can maintain your teeth’s natural whiteness and shine, avoid unnecessary enamel damage, and improve your overall oral health.
