Tooth decay remains the most prevalent chronic condition among children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Research indicates that over half of all children will have experienced cavities in their primary (baby) teeth by the age of 8. This early onset of tooth decay not only causes discomfort but also increases the likelihood of more serious dental problems in adulthood.
Despite its commonality, most cases of tooth decay are preventable, making early intervention and proactive care essential. Studies have shown that poor oral health in children can significantly impact their overall quality of life, affecting their performance at school and potentially influencing their future success.
In an effort to combat this issue, Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, part of MaineHealth, is prioritizing access to comprehensive oral health care for children, starting even before their first tooth emerges. In collaboration with MaineGeneral Health, Northern Light Health, and other local organizations, MaineHealth is a key partner in the From the First Tooth (FTFT) initiative. This statewide program aims to integrate oral health care into primary pediatric and family practices for children, from infancy through young adulthood, up to age 21.
The FTFT initiative focuses on embedding a prevention-first approach to oral health into pediatric care. During routine well-child visits, the initiative encourages healthcare providers to include: 1) oral health risk assessments, 2) fluoride varnish applications, 3) education for parents and caregivers, and 4) timely referrals to dental professionals.
To support primary care providers in this work, FTFT offers a range of resources, including virtual training, clinical guidelines, educational videos, and multilingual materials. Through these efforts, the program is helping ensure that children across Maine receive the oral health care they need to grow into healthy, thriving adults.
