A prominent dentist has cautioned that widely used teeth whitening products available across the UK are nothing more than “nonsense” and a complete waste of consumers’ money.
Dr. Hames Davies, a specialist orthodontist and owner of Quayside Orthodontics in Carmarthen, asserted that over-the-counter whitening solutions, including certain toothpastes, mouthwashes, and charcoal products, are ineffective. He urged individuals seeking a brighter smile to reconsider their purchases and save their money.
“Off-the-shelf whitening products are merely gimmicks—these toothpastes and mouthwashes are all nonsense,” Dr. Davies stated. According to insights shared on the Sky News Money Blog, he explained that the whitening agents in these products are too weak to produce significant results.
“To achieve effective whitening, a prescription containing 6% hydrogen peroxide is required. Anything else is essentially pointless,” he emphasized. “In the UK, any product containing more than this amount is illegal. Most over-the-counter options contain less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, which makes any whitening effect minimal and largely a placebo.”
In addition to addressing whitening concerns, Dr. Adarsh Thanki, Principal Dentist at the Ace Dental Group, offered advice on preventing tooth decay. He highlighted the importance of establishing a solid oral hygiene routine as a crucial step in protecting dental health.
This routine includes brushing at least twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, followed by rinsing with mouthwash. Dr. Thanki recommended using an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash, but advised against using it immediately after brushing, as it can diminish the fluoride’s effectiveness. Mouthwash can help reduce plaque, combat bacteria, and strengthen tooth enamel.
He also emphasized the significance of staying hydrated throughout the day, as water assists in washing away food particles, neutralizing acids, and promoting healthy saliva flow. Additionally, snacking on nuts and seeds can be beneficial, as they provide essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus, which contribute to stronger teeth.
With proper oral care and informed choices, individuals can maintain healthier smiles without succumbing to ineffective whitening gimmicks.
