A recent claim by TikTok users suggests that TheraBreath mouthwash, a popular oral hygiene product, may cause unexpected side effects, including tooth discoloration. Content creator Syd (@usernamesydnie) shared her surprise after learning from another video that the mouthwash might contribute to brown staining on teeth.
Syd, holding a bottle of TheraBreath’s Deep Clean mouthwash, expressed her frustration to viewers. “Why did I just find out [that] this can turn your teeth brown?” she asked, noting that she had only recently purchased the product. She also mentioned that some commenters warned of an additional side effect—“hairy tongue.”
The TikTok video quickly gained traction, reaching nearly 700,000 views by Sunday, as concerned viewers weighed in with their own experiences and insights.
Another TikTok user, May (@may_gah), had previously raised similar concerns, sharing a video in September where she attributed her teeth’s slight yellow tint to TheraBreath. May suggested that the ingredient responsible could be cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which is known to occasionally cause staining in about 3% of users, according to the dental information site Teeth Talk Girl. The site clarified that this discoloration is superficial and can typically be removed with a professional cleaning.
Notably, not all TheraBreath mouthwash products contain CPC, and it’s an ingredient commonly found in various dental products beyond TheraBreath.
On the issue of “hairy tongue,” there appears to be no direct connection to TheraBreath specifically. According to the American Academy of Oral Medicine, a hairy tongue is often caused by factors such as poor oral hygiene, prolonged antibiotic use, or excessive coffee or tea consumption. Improved brushing habits are generally sufficient to resolve this condition.
In response to Syd’s video, viewers shared mixed reviews of TheraBreath. Some recommended specific products within the TheraBreath line that do not contain CPC. “Only get the blue one,” one commenter advised, while others praised the whitening variant for its efficacy.
Not all feedback was positive, however, with some commenters sharing their own adverse reactions to the product. One user mentioned experiencing contact dermatitis, while another reported increased tooth sensitivity, leading them to switch to sensitive toothpaste.
TheraBreath remains a well-regarded brand in the dental care market, yet these online discussions highlight the importance of understanding product ingredients and potential side effects.
