Increasing numbers of individuals are seeking teeth whitening treatments in pursuit of the ideal smile. Discoloration can result from habits such as smoking or consuming beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine, significantly affecting one’s confidence.
While dentists offer professional whitening services, various at-home whitening kits are readily available online. Although these products can be safe when purchased from reputable sources, dental professionals are cautioning consumers about potential adverse effects on dental health.
Dr. Smita Mehra, BDS MFGDPRCS, Principal Dentist at The Neem Tree Dental Practice, highlights the risks associated with at-home teeth whitening kits and suggests safer alternatives. Teeth whitening involves using bleaching agents, either through whitening gels or lasers, to lighten the color of teeth. The NHS advises seeking treatment exclusively from registered dental professionals.
Dr. Mehra notes, “Many people aiming for a brighter smile often resort to at-home whitening kits and strips, viewing them as a cost-effective solution for tooth staining or discoloration.”
She further elaborates, “While most whitening strips are safe to use as long as you follow the supplier’s instructions, elevated levels of certain chemicals in these kits can lead to tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Moreover, these products often adopt a ‘one size fits all’ approach, meaning they may not address the specific needs of your dental condition.”
Consequently, she warns that at-home kits could potentially result in gum burns or damage to the tooth enamel. Such harm may increase the risk of more serious dental issues, including tooth decay and gum disease.
For those with stained or discolored teeth, Dr. Mehra emphasizes the availability of alternative solutions that do not rely on at-home kits. Professional teeth whitening performed by a dentist ensures a safe and effective approach to achieving a brighter smile.
Additionally, she recommends simple preventive measures: “Brushing your teeth twice daily can help combat bacteria and plaque buildup. Rinsing your mouth with water after consuming dark-staining beverages and scheduling professional cleanings at least twice a year can also contribute to maintaining the whiteness of your teeth.”
