On TikTok, dental professionals are shedding light on the high-cost cosmetic dental work that many Hollywood stars undergo to achieve their flawless smiles. Celebrities known for their stunningly perfect teeth are reportedly turning to various treatments to enhance their smiles, opting for procedures that result in whiter, straighter, and more uniform teeth.
While some famous individuals use their wealth to address essential dental health needs, such as braces, others have taken drastic measures, including reshaping their teeth and replacing them with designer ceramic veneers. TikTok users are increasingly curious about the dental transformations of stars like Margot Robbie, Taylor Swift, and Emma Watson, often asking dentists on the platform for a “veneer check.”
Dr. Vikas Prinja, known as “The London Dentist,” recently analyzed the dental work of the “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” singer. He suggested that she may have corrected her “crowded front teeth” and “peg-shaped lateral incisors” through a combination of braces and veneers. Similarly, Dr. Rhona Eskander, who runs the Chelsea Dental Clinic in London, speculated that Victoria Beckham, the couture designer and former Spice Girl, likely underwent a gum lift and received a full set of veneers, which can cost over $3,000 per tooth.
Among TikTok users, Cheryl Cole, former singer of the British girl group Girls Aloud, has garnered attention for her striking dental transformation. Dr. Eskander noted that the aesthetic appeal of a smile can be measured by the number of teeth visible when someone smiles. Initially, Cole’s smile revealed only six unevenly spaced teeth, but after years in the public eye, her smile now showcases twelve flawless pearly whites. Eskander also praised Cole’s natural “pointy canines,” calling them “one of the best smiles I’ve ever seen.”
Dr. Sam Jethwa, president-elect of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, remarked on the growing trend among his patients, stating, “A highly qualified cosmetic dentist can often discern the treatments celebrities have received. Spotting these procedures is part of our job, given our daily exposure to them.”
The industry is witnessing a shift away from the overly bright, white Hollywood smile in favor of more subtle enhancements that leave room for speculation. Jethwa believes this trend has contributed to the popularity of celebrity smile transformation videos.
As cosmetic dentistry becomes more accessible, some dental professionals are raising alarms about the dangers of pricey and unnecessary treatments. In a recent statement to the Sunday Times, Eddie Crouch, chairman of the British Dental Association, warned users to be cautious when emulating their idols, particularly concerning DIY dental hacks. He cautioned that some influencers promote dangerous practices, potentially leading their followers down a harmful path.
Jethwa recounted an alarming incident involving a TikTok user who attempted to remove their braces with a spoon, highlighting the inherent risks associated with such misguided actions. “The concern is that these videos are not adequately regulated by TikTok, leaving users vulnerable to imitating dangerous practices without understanding the potential consequences,” he noted.
In an age where social media greatly influences beauty standards, both patients and professionals must navigate the fine line between aspiration and health, ensuring that safety remains a priority in the pursuit of an ideal smile.
