The Rockhampton Youth Co-Responder Team (YCRT) has teamed up with the CQUniversity Oral Health Clinic to launch Project Smiles, an initiative aimed at improving dental health among disadvantaged youth in Rockhampton.
The YCRT, which includes police officers and youth justice officers, focuses on engaging with young individuals at risk of entering the criminal justice system. Through their work, when they identify a young person in need of dental care, they can refer them to the CQUniversity Oral Health Clinic as part of this collaborative effort. The clinic offers various dental services, including check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and extractions, ensuring that these essential services are both accessible and affordable for those in need.
The initiative was founded by Ashley Anderson and De-Anne Pilchowski, third-year oral health students at CQUniversity. Ashley emphasized the importance of the partnership in not only improving dental health but also enhancing the overall quality of life for young people in the community.
“By working together, we are addressing their immediate needs while also building trust and rapport with young people who may feel disconnected from traditional support systems,” Ashley explained. “Poor dental health can significantly affect their ability to eat, sleep, and socialize. Disadvantaged youth often struggle with social behaviors and maintaining routines, leading to long-term health and well-being issues as they transition into adulthood.”
Karen Smart, Head of Course for the Bachelor of Oral Health at CQUniversity, praised the students for their role in creating impactful community partnerships.
“A commitment to community outreach and hands-on learning opportunities in our Bachelor of Oral Health program has allowed us to build partnerships that are both educational and beneficial,” Karen stated. “This initiative reminds us that small acts of kindness can create a lasting impact.”
She added, “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our youth, helping them to not only smile more but also smile healthier.”
Project Smiles aims to continue bringing joy and better dental health to the Rockhampton community, one toothbrush at a time.
