A critical alert has been raised regarding a troubling trend that could lead to painful and irreversible dental damage. While many people turn to TikTok for creative tips and hacks to simplify their daily lives, not all trends are safe, especially when it comes to oral health.
One particularly concerning trend gaining traction on the platform is the use of DIY braces to enhance one’s smile. Dentists are sounding the alarm that these makeshift braces can cause severe tooth damage and lasting harm. Dr. Joana Ferreira, a dentist at The Neem Tree Dental Practice with a specialization in orthodontics, has highlighted the dangers of this trend and its potential long-term effects on dental health.
Dr. Ferreira remarked, “We’ve noticed a disturbing trend emerging on TikTok—referred to as ‘DIY Braces’ or ‘fashion braces.’ These are non-medical, decorative braces that individuals apply at home without any professional guidance.” She emphasized that while some may view these braces as a stylish, cost-effective solution for teeth straightening, the reality is far more alarming.
“These DIY braces present significant health risks to your oral health. They are marketed as a quicker and cheaper alternative to professional orthodontic services. However, this poses a serious threat because these braces are not fitted by qualified dentists, who have the expertise to ensure that your teeth remain safe and healthy,” Dr. Ferreira explained.
Many individuals are applying these braces using adhesive non-medical grade glue, which can lead to loose wires and brackets. This not only increases the risk of cuts and injuries to the mouth and jaw but also heightens the chances of infections and gum problems.
On the specific dangers of DIY braces, Dr. Ferreira stated, “Braces must be applied in a controlled and gradual manner, tailored by your dentist to address the severity of your dental issues. Attempting to fit or remove these devices yourself can result in damage to the roots and gums of your teeth, as well as potential injury to the jawbone.”
She elaborated that self-application can exert incorrect pressure on the teeth, leading to significant pain and discomfort. This mishandling can compromise bone structure, cause gum recession, and ultimately result in loose teeth that may fall out. Furthermore, if these DIY braces become loose or detach, they pose severe risks, including cuts, lacerations, and even choking hazards.
Given the alarming risks associated with this trend, dental professionals strongly advise against the use of DIY braces and emphasize the importance of seeking professional orthodontic care for safe and effective treatment options.
