Dr. Zaeem Jafri, a dental expert from British oral care company Ordo, has highlighted six common mistakes people make when brushing their teeth, warning that these seemingly minor habits could lead to serious oral health problems. From brushing too hard to using a toothbrush in the shower, these everyday blunders can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum issues.
Here are Dr. Zaeem’s key recommendations to improve your dental hygiene and maintain optimal oral health.
One of the most common mistakes people make is treating an electric toothbrush like a manual one, using vigorous effort. Dr. Zaeem warns that this can lead to gum damage and even tooth loss. “Electric toothbrushes are designed to do the work for you,” he explains. Instead of scrubbing, place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle on each tooth, hold it there for three to five seconds, and then move on. Brushing too hard can cause gum recession and other oral health issues.
While it may seem convenient to brush your teeth in the shower, Dr. Zaeem advises against it. The moisture and heat in the shower create an ideal environment for bacteria growth, exposing your toothbrush—and mouth—to unwanted germs. The hot water can also damage the bristles, reducing the effectiveness of your brushing. Dr. Zaeem recommends brushing either before or after your shower to keep your oral care tools clean.
There’s often confusion about the best time to use mouthwash. Dr. Zaeem emphasizes that using mouthwash immediately after brushing can wash away the fluoride left on your teeth, reducing its protective benefits. He advises waiting a while after brushing before using mouthwash or choosing a different time, such as right after meals, to freshen your breath and remove acidic food particles.
By following these tips, you can avoid common brushing errors that could negatively impact your dental health. Brushing correctly, timing your use of oral care products, and keeping your toothbrush in a clean environment are all essential steps to ensuring a healthy smile for years to come.
