Since undergoing emergency wisdom teeth removal in 2017, my oral health has taken a downturn. I’ve faced a receding gumline, necessitating a gum graft, dealt with the consequences of an uneven bite, and struggled with a concerning buildup of plaque. Much of this stems from my tendency to avoid dental visits, a decision influenced by past unpleasant experiences.
Unfortunately, I’m not alone in this aversion to the dentist. A 2021 survey by Value Penguin revealed that over a third of Americans do not visit the dentist at least once a year. While the CDC recommends at least one annual visit, it advises two for individuals with existing dental issues. Skipping these check-ups can lead to problems like those I’ve encountered.
In response to this common dilemma, Sama, a new dental care practice dedicated to holistic integrative wellness, is set to open this week. Located in Flatiron, New York City, Sama aims to transform the dental experience. Founder Dr. Jaskaren Randhawa, a dentist and educator, is committed to treating overall health through dental care, believing that addressing oral health can contribute to a longer lifespan.
During my visit, Dr. Randhawa emphasized, “Your body isn’t balanced unless your mouth is.” She pointed out that the mouth serves as a gateway to the body and is often the first place medical conditions, such as diabetes, esophageal reflux disease, and rheumatoid arthritis, are identified.
Oral health plays a vital role in overall wellness. While many people are aware of the gut microbiome’s significance, the importance of the oral microbiome is often overlooked. “The oral microbiome is closely linked to the gut,” Dr. Randhawa explained. The bacterial makeup in the mouth can indicate a person’s risk for cavities and other dental issues.
Sama adopts a comprehensive approach to oral health, extending its services beyond traditional dental care to include orthodontics, cosmetic and periodontic dentistry, and nutritional guidance from a dedicated nutritionist. Patients can also expect functional massage therapies. Notably, Sama will provide facial aesthetics, including Botox and fillers, recognizing that feeling good about one’s appearance can enhance overall wellness. “It’s nice to feel good,” Dr. Randhawa stated.
The goal at Sama is to promote healthy aging, positioning itself among a wave of wellness centers focused on longevity. Alongside established venues like The Well, Elix Wellness, and Remedy Place—each offering various wellness modalities such as ice baths, infrared saunas, acupuncture, IV drips, and cryotherapy—Sama stands out for its integrative approach to dental care.
Upon entering the Sama studio, I immediately felt a shift from my past dental experiences. The space, designed by Ringo Studio—known for creating the aesthetic of Glossier stores—features warm lighting, curved windows, sage green limewash walls, and round, plush furniture, creating an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of stylish home décor often seen on TikTok. This environment set the stage for a significantly more pleasant dental experience, offering hope for a brighter future in oral care.
