The NHS recommends that adults in the UK brush their teeth twice daily and floss regularly to maintain oral health. However, despite these efforts, some common habits could be leading to yellowing teeth, according to Dr. Alex Foo, an award-winning dentist from Aria Dental.
Dr. Foo highlights that even with good intentions, many people unknowingly make simple mistakes that can damage their teeth by wearing away the protective enamel. This can cause discoloration, increased sensitivity, and a greater risk of cavities. Here are three everyday habits Dr. Foo advises avoiding for a brighter, healthier smile:
Brushing Too Aggressively with a Manual Toothbrush
“Many people don’t realize that brushing too hard with a manual toothbrush can wear down enamel, exposing the yellow dentine layer underneath,” says Dr. Foo. He recommends switching to an electric toothbrush, which can help regulate the pressure applied and protect enamel from erosion.
Frequent Snacking
Constant snacking keeps teeth in an acidic state, increasing the risk of enamel erosion. “Each time you eat, acids are produced in your mouth, attacking the enamel,” Dr. Foo explains. “Frequent snacking prolongs this acid exposure, leading to enamel loss and yellowing.”
Drinking Fizzy Drinks Without a Straw
Fizzy drinks are highly acidic and can cause significant damage to enamel. Dr. Foo warns that without using a straw, these drinks come into direct contact with teeth, speeding up the erosion process. “Using a straw can minimize contact and help protect teeth from acid exposure,” he says.
Dr. Foo emphasizes that protecting enamel is crucial for maintaining a bright smile. The NHS also recommends brushing twice a day, flossing, and reducing sugar intake for overall dental health. “Small changes in your daily routine,” Dr. Foo adds, “can make a big difference in keeping your teeth healthy and white.”
