Mesa Community College (MCC) dental hygiene students are providing free oral health screenings at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) located at 5855 E. Still Circle, Mesa. Appointments are available at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. and can be booked by calling 480-248-8195. The schedule operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligible individuals for these screenings are those who meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Have not had a dental cleaning in over five years
- Have been diagnosed with a need for deep gum cleaning but have not commenced treatment
- Experience bleeding gums while brushing, eating, or speaking
- Have gums that are tender and sore to the touch
It is important to note that these screenings are not comprehensive dental exams, and no immediate treatments will be administered during the event. Those who require more intensive periodontal care will be scheduled for additional appointments in the evening after the event.
Current MCC students and employees are eligible for discounted services, with a maximum estimated cost of $360. In comparison, private dental practices may charge at least $1,000 for similar treatments without insurance coverage. According to Dawn Brause, MCC’s allied health clinical coordinator, “Even with dental insurance, patients might face out-of-pocket costs between $600 and $800. Those requiring advanced treatments may benefit from further discounts, subject to the availability of Access to Care funds.”
Participants must consent to having a full set of x-rays taken, which can be obtained for $20. These x-rays will be available for pickup during business hours at the ASDOH Dental Clinic.
The free screenings will include:
- Comprehensive health history review
- Blood pressure and glucose level checks
- Evaluations of head, neck, and oral soft/hard tissues
- Referrals for further dental treatments
This initiative provides invaluable practical experience for MCC’s second-year dental hygiene students, crucial for their state licensing exams. The event also enhances students’ community engagement, communication skills, and compassionate care practices, emphasizing a holistic approach to oral health.
For appointments outside of this screening event, the MCC dental hygiene clinic offers a full range of services during evening hours. To schedule, call the clinic at 480-248-8195.
