Located in the LMU Tower in North Knoxville, the LMU Dental Clinic is making a significant impact by providing high-quality dental care at an affordable price. Qi Wang, Interim Dean of the College of Dental Medicine, emphasized the clinic’s commitment to serving the local community and enhancing access to essential dental services.
According to U.S. News and World Report, Tennessee ranks 43rd in the nation for dental care accessibility, indicating that many residents lack regular dental attention. In response, LMU’s clinic aims to address this gap by offering accessible dental care while also serving as a learning platform for dental students.
The clinic operates under the guidance of experienced faculty members, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. Students begin their training with simulated exercises and, by their third year, transition to providing care to actual patients.
Kortney Powell, a student doctor, described the educational progression, noting the shift from classroom learning to direct patient interaction. “We move from simulation to assisting, and eventually, we become student practitioners. This hands-on experience is invaluable,” Powell explained.
Wang highlighted LMU’s philosophy of offering community-focused, low-cost dental services, particularly to underserved populations. Bahia Mohd, another student, shared her motivation: “Many people are unaware that oral health affects overall well-being. It’s rewarding to contribute to reducing health disparities in our community.”
LMU President Jason McConnell encouraged East Tennesseans to take advantage of the clinic’s services. “If you have an oral health concern, please visit us. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of our community and the surrounding Appalachian regions,” McConnell said.
The clinic operates from Monday to Thursday, with appointments available at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 865-370-2128. If a representative is unavailable, leave a detailed message with contact information, and a member of the College of Dental Medicine will return the call to arrange an appointment.
