PHOENIX — For individuals battling addiction, maintaining dental hygiene often becomes a secondary concern, leading to severe dental issues that can impede their journey to recovery. Addressing this critical need, two Phoenix-based non-profits are making significant strides in transforming lives by restoring smiles and boosting self-esteem.
Trevor Gordon’s story exemplifies the profound impact of these initiatives. At seventeen, Trevor began misusing pain pills, a habit that swiftly escalated into a debilitating addiction. His struggle with substance abuse led to neglect of his dental health, resulting in severe dental problems that compounded his challenges.
Determined to change his path, Trevor enrolled in the John Volken Academy (JVA) last year—a two-year residential program dedicated to long-term addiction treatment and life skills development. The JVA employs a work therapy approach, involving responsibilities such as caring for 155 horses, acquiring trade skills, and pursuing educational goals. After sixteen months, Trevor credits the program with helping him rediscover happiness and stability.
Upon joining the JVA, Trevor faced the harsh reality of his deteriorated dental health. Recognizing the profound connection between dental well-being and overall recovery, Dr. Sam Bollwinkel founded Smiles Outreach, a non-profit organization committed to providing comprehensive dental care to individuals like Trevor. Collaborating with the JVA for the past year, Dr. Bollwinkel oversees dental treatments from start to finish, aiming to enhance both smiles and self-confidence.
“Our mission is to transform their smiles, which can significantly boost their confidence and alter their life trajectories,” Dr. Bollwinkel explained. “A fresh smile can provide a fresh start.”
Utilizing advanced dental technology, Dr. Bollwinkel was able to completely rebuild Trevor’s smile in just one day. “We offer same-day crowns and utilize 3D printing technology to create precise dental restorations. With CT imaging, we effectively treat infections and abscesses. Our goal is to provide top-tier care typically found in private practices, all within a non-profit framework,” he detailed.
The results of Dr. Bollwinkel’s work were transformative. Trevor, who had not seen himself with a healthy smile in years, experienced a remarkable change. The dental restoration not only improved his appearance but also significantly enhanced his self-esteem and overall health.
“It was incredible to see my mother cry tears of joy instead of worry when I showed her my new smile,” Trevor shared. “I no longer have to think about those negative aspects daily. I can now see myself with a confident smile, which feels amazing.”
Beyond the cosmetic benefits, restoring Trevor’s dental health has broader implications for his overall well-being. Dr. Bollwinkel emphasized the importance of dental care in enabling individuals to chew properly and maintain proper nutrition, which is crucial for their health and recovery. “Restoring teeth allows individuals to enjoy a varied diet, which is essential for their physical health and supports their recovery journey,” he stated.
With several months remaining in the JVA program, Trevor looks forward to a future filled with joy, giving back to the community, maintaining his sobriety, and reconnecting with family and friends. “Rebuilding those relationships is something I never thought I’d achieve,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his journey, Trevor expressed deep gratitude: “I may not know exactly what lies ahead, but I do know that these changes have made my life better than it could have been without them. I feel blessed and incredibly lucky.”
Through the combined efforts of the John Volken Academy and Smiles Outreach, Arizona is paving the way for individuals struggling with addiction to regain their smiles, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose in life.
