As National Tooth Fairy Day approaches on August 22, Delta Dental of Arizona’s Original Tooth Fairy Poll has revealed a notable decrease in the average value of a lost tooth. The poll indicates that the amount has dropped by 8% over the past year, from $5.63 to $5.18. This decline marks the first decrease in several years, although the current rate remains higher than the $4.79 average recorded in 2022.
Dr. Heather Schneider, dental director at Delta Dental of Arizona, emphasized the poll’s role in highlighting the importance of children’s oral health. “Despite the lower reward, the Tooth Fairy remains an engaging way to promote good dental hygiene. As children transition from baby teeth to adult teeth, it is crucial they learn proper dental care to maintain a healthy smile.”
Dr. Schneider noted that the poll’s findings have diverged from broader economic trends. Traditionally, the Original Tooth Fairy Poll has mirrored the performance of the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index. However, in 2024, the value of a lost tooth fell by 8% while the S&P 500 rose by 30%. This mirrors a similar trend from 2023, when the value of a tooth increased by 18% despite a 10% decline in the S&P 500.
Dr. Schneider suggested that inflation may be influencing the Tooth Fairy’s budget. “With rising food prices and increasing costs of other consumer goods, it’s possible the Tooth Fairy is adjusting her spending habits.”
Regardless of the amount, Dr. Schneider highlighted that the Tooth Fairy serves as an important tool for encouraging children to embrace oral health practices, offering potential rewards like special toothbrushes or sugar-free gum to reinforce healthy habits.
