David Creamer, a 62-year-old former miner, has finally received new dentures after enduring months of dental difficulties and bureaucratic delays. Creamer, who lost a dental crown and five teeth last year, was initially advised that all his remaining teeth needed extraction and that he required dentures. The estimated cost of £5,274 for private treatment was prohibitive for him, given his reliance on benefits.
In his search for help, Creamer reached out to 16 different NHS dental practices but was unable to secure an appointment. His situation, which included a deepening embarrassment and a reliance on painkillers and soft foods, became known through BBC coverage.
Following media exposure, Creamer was eventually contacted by Ivy Cottage Practice in Rotherham, which is affiliated with Riverdale Healthcare Group. Although the practice was not accepting new patients, it managed to offer additional NHS appointments by reallocating resources to accommodate urgent cases.
Ian Gordon, Dental Director at the practice, explained that their efforts were part of a broader initiative to address the growing demand for dental services. Over the past 18 months, they have provided 3,500 additional sessions, helping approximately 24,000 patients.
The NHS South Yorkshire Integrated Care Board has been commissioning practices to offer urgent access sessions to improve access for patients in need. A spokesperson advised that individuals with urgent dental needs should contact NHS 111 or their local dentist, where they would undergo a telephone triage to determine if an appointment is clinically necessary.
Creamer expressed initial disbelief when offered an appointment, describing his experience at the dental clinic as surreal. “When they put me in the chair with all the flashing lights, I thought I was in Captain Kirk’s spaceship,” he said.
Having undergone tooth extractions and had his upper dentures fitted, Creamer now enjoys a wider range of foods and feels a significant improvement in his quality of life. He remarked on the positive change: “I can now enjoy chunky soup and will treat myself to a steak once the bottom set is finished. It’s wonderful to look in the mirror and see teeth again.”
