Pharmacists Abdul Azzam and Nael Karim have achieved a breakthrough in mouth ulcer treatment with their newly invented product, UlcerEze. The innovation was driven by a personal tragedy; the sister of their business partner, Omar Sukkar, suffered from severe mouth ulcers due to an autoimmune condition. Her distress led Sukkar to urge the pharmacists to develop a remedy.
Identifying a gap in effective long-term treatments, the team created a unique patch designed to stay intact in moist environments for up to 24 hours.
The UlcerEze patch had to meet stringent Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approval standards, demonstrating its efficacy in accelerating mouth ulcer recovery.
“Our patch, a first in Australia, offers extended relief by serving as a protective barrier, rather than just numbing the pain like other treatments,” Sukkar explained.
“Traditional gels and creams fail to provide lasting relief as they are easily washed away by saliva. Saliva exacerbates the pain and hinders healing by continuously irritating the ulcer,” he added.
UlcerEze addresses this issue with its innovative patch design, which is activated by saliva to form a protective barrier against both saliva and air, mitigating the ulcer’s discomfort.
The patch incorporates three naturally derived active ingredients: silicon for its renowned wound-healing properties, and calcium and phosphorus, which provide anti-inflammatory benefits and enhance mucous membrane recovery. The extended contact time of these ingredients with the ulcer ensures a more rapid healing process compared to other available treatments.
