Weston-super-Mare has introduced “Lottie,” a new mobile dental unit funded by the Health Lottery. This initiative aims to deliver crucial dental services to individuals experiencing homelessness and social exclusion.
Led by Dentaid, the Dental Charity, the unit addresses the urgent oral health needs of marginalized groups, including survivors of abuse, cancer patients, fishing communities, low-income families, and those struggling with addiction.
On August 22, the mobile unit will host its third Health Lottery-funded clinic, marking a key milestone in the ongoing effort to provide essential dental care.
During the first two clinics in Weston, 19 patients received a total of 77 treatments. Services included extractions, fillings for those in dental pain, and scale and polish treatments to boost confidence. Patients also benefited from oral health education, oral cancer screenings, and guidance on accessing healthcare and support services. The upcoming clinic is expected to continue meeting the needs of those overcoming substance misuse and homelessness.
Statistics reveal that 70% of individuals facing homelessness experience toothache, with 15% forced to extract their own teeth due to inadequate dental care. The daily hardships of those living on the streets or in unstable housing make maintaining oral health particularly challenging.
The Health Lottery has raised over £132 million for health and wellbeing projects across Great Britain. The initiative in Weston exemplifies their commitment to making a positive impact.
