A prominent dentist has raised an urgent warning about a hazardous online trend claiming to whiten teeth but potentially causing severe health issues. Dr. Vikas Prinja, known on TikTok as @thelondondentist, has cautioned against the popular “peroxide mouthwash trend.”
Dr. Prinja emphasized the risks associated with using high-concentration peroxide for teeth whitening, a practice that deviates from professional dental treatments. He explained, “While peroxide is a common ingredient in professional teeth whitening, it must be used at a controlled concentration. Overuse of high-strength peroxide, especially when undiluted, can cause significant damage.”
The dentist demonstrated the potential harm by showing a tongue discolored with a black substance, a condition known as “black hairy tongue.” According to NHS guidelines, although this condition is treatable, it can lead to distress due to its appearance and impact on taste.
Dr. Prinja further warned that excessive exposure to concentrated peroxide can weaken tooth enamel, resulting in increased sensitivity, staining, and vulnerability to decay. Additionally, ingesting high concentrations of the chemical poses serious health risks, including toxicity and potential life-threatening effects.
